Introduce

Hi! I'm Mimi

Cat Sanctuary Ontario

I’m the founder of Love and Whiskers Cat Sanctuary Ontario, a permanent home for cats who are considered unadoptable, and therefore on the euthanasia list — senior, disabled, FeLV or FIV positive, feral, deaf, blind, or those with severe behavioral challenges. With a background in microbiology and years of research experience studying possible treatments for FeLV, I combine science with compassion to give these cats the care and stability they deserve. I also specialize in managing cat colonies and helping fearful or undersocialized cats from shelters adjust to their forever homes. And finally but most importantly, I am working on opening  The Whisker School. I will share my 25 years of experience caring for cats with rescues, shelters, and colony caregivers. Training will include practical, heart-centered approaches to help more cats transition safely — and stay in their new homes..

A Quick Background

Cat Sanctuary Ontario

My true passion lies in formulating holistic health protocols designed for FeLV, FIV, FIP, senior, and terminally ill cats. Through these protocols, I have helped many small rescues and colony caregivers revitalize their cat’s health. With a strong background in Biochemistry, I approach this field with an out-of-the-box type of mindset on feline care beyond the conventional.

Presently there is an increase in pet abandonment due to the high cost of pet food and vet costs.

my journey

how it all began

In 2017, I moved to Cornwall, Ontario. A few days after settling into my new home, I noticed several cats in my backyard. Having worked in rescue since I was young, I could tell these cats didn’t belong to anyone — they were thin, frightened, and searching for food.

I couldn’t just turn a blind eye, so I decided that I had to help them. With my 25 years of experience rescuing cats, I knew what I had to do. So I started the process of saving them.

The First Colony

When I first started feeding the backyard cats, I wanted to make sure they truly had no one. I went door to door asking around. That’s when I learned there were many more — abandoned, hungry, and multiplying fast.

Kind neighbors were doing what they could, but the kittens kept coming. I tried reaching out to rescues and shelters for help, but none were able to take them. I realized something had to change — and that it had to start with me.

Through other caregivers in town, I learned where to get feral cats spayed and neutered. One by one, I began helping the cats in my area. Every cat was fixed, vaccinated, and treated for parasites. Slowly, the colony stabilized.

Becoming a Sanctuary

Over time, I realized not all of these cats were feral. Some were simply scared, lost, or too fragile to survive outdoors. A few were seniors, some were blind or deaf, others had FeLV or FIV. I couldn’t turn away from them.

So I moved to a peaceful rural area and founded Love and Whiskers Sanctuary — a place where these cats could live out their lives safely and with love.

I never set out to run a sanctuary, but as the years passed, it became clear this was my calling. Eight years later, many of those same cats are still with me — healthy, happy, and deeply loved.

Why Managed Colonies Matter

Caring for cat colonies helps everyone — not just the cats.
When cats are spayed, neutered, vaccinated, and fed regularly, they become calm and settled. They stay close to their colony and don’t wander or fight.

Because they have food and playtime, they don’t hunt birds or small animals. And since they are treated for parasites and vaccinated, they don’t spread illness. A managed colony is clean, peaceful, and safe — for the cats and the community.

How You Can Help

Love and Whiskers Sanctuary continues to care for both sanctuary and colony cats. Due to rising costs of food and veterinary care, we can no longer take in more cats, but we still support those already under our care.
